THE EFFECT OF THE 2021 BUDGET ON VISAS

The 2021 Federal Budget was announced on the 11th of May 2021 and outlines the government’s spending and federal economic policies and predictions for the coming financial year. Immigration Minister Alex Hawke has stated the government intends to maintain the 2021/2022 Migration Program ceiling at 160,000 places. These places are divided into the following streams:

  • 79,600 Skilled (such as subclasses 189, 190, 491)
  • 77,300 Family (such as subclasses 820, 801, 143, 103)
  • 3,100 to other streams (such as student, graduate and business)

Whilst the cap on places was not raised, the government pledged nearly $300 million to focus reviewing onshore partner visa (820, 801) applications over the next four years.

The budget predicts that net overseas migration will increase to 235,000 in 2024-25. This symbolises a need for the government to increase migration program places over the coming years to meet expectations.

The effects of the budget and its predictions on visa applicants are mixed. If you are applying or want to apply for an onshore partner visa, these will likely be quickly reviewed with a greater chance of success. Similarly, as borders re-open, places in other streams of migration will likely increase. Therefore, it is important to prepare applications, such that when places are available you may be considered.
